Mets a Mess Off the Field

Earlier today, Jay Horowitz sent out a letter to Mets fans, telling them the team will do all the right things on the field.

The problem? Well, besides calling our catcher "Jose Thole" (WTF?), the letter was "signed" by Terry Collins. The truth is: it came from Horowitz, Collins had nothing to do with it.

On the fan today, Mike Francesa interviewed Collins and asked him: "we know now that you didn't send the letter, but do you agree with its contents?" (Francesa's podcast is available for free through iTunes)

Terry's response: "I have to be honest, I haven't read the letter yet."

How the hell did they sign his name to it without even running it by them? Embarrassing.

I'm not by any means giving up on Alderson for one relatively insignificant snafu, but as a Mets fan, I'm snake-bitten. For now, the new regime looks a lot like the old one: one hand doesn't know what the other hand is doing.

The Mets dropped their road opener to Florida on Friday, 6-2.

The Yankees defeated the Tigers in their home opener on Thursday by a score of 6 to 3.

Rautins: Fields can't drive

A little clip from our two favorite New York Knicks rookies.

While we're at it, this is even better. Do you remember "I'm Coming Home", that cheesy hyper-dramatic video that MSG made for Melo's debut? Now that Jared Jefferies is back in a blue uniform, someone thought he deserved his own video. The results are hilarious. Check it out:

Knicks put out the Heat

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Days off a defeat at the hands of one of the league's worst, the New York Knicks defeated one of the league's best. It was a showcase of stars as NY's big three faced off with Miami's big three.

In the end, however, it came down to one star on each side: Stat vs. James. Down by 1 with seconds left, James drove the lane and was rejected by Amar'e. Seconds later, James again missed: this time from three point range.

For a game between two basketball teams loaded with offensive firepower, the affair was surprisingly low scoring. Dare one say: playoff-like? When the night was over, the Knicks had pulled out the win 91-86 in Miami.

Rounding up your game leaders: Melo scored 29; Amar'e grabbed 10 boards, Shawne Williams had 4 assists.

Yanks, Mets begin spring training

Spring training exhibition games kicked off for both the Yankees and Mets in Florida today.

In what may be a potential World Series preview, the Yanks dropped their opener to the Phillies 5-4. Jorge Vazquez went 2-2 with a homer for the Bombers in the loss.

In Port St. Lucie, the boys in blue and orange and the Braves played to a 5-5 tie. The game was called after 10 innings. The Mets showed resiliency, coming back from behind to tie the game on 3 separate occasions. Jennry Mejia started the game, allowing 1 unearned run over 2; Fernando Martinez and Willie Harris homered for the Mets.

It's nice to see baseball back in action, especially because it means spring is right around the corner.

Despite struggles, Knicks win Melo debut

In Carmello Anthony's Knicks debut, the Knicks pulled off a win 114-108 over the Bucks. Melo struggled from the field, shooting just 10/25, and Stat was in foul trouble all night but backup PG Toney Douglas carried the team to a win.

It was exciting to see the electricity in the Garden once again. The place hasn't looked so thrilled since #33 was on the court.

Melo, Billups Set to Debut

Knicks tickets are flying off the shelves as F Carmello Anthony and G Chauncey Billups get set to make their debut in a Knickerbocker uniform tonight. NY will host the Milwaukee Bucks tonight at Madison Square Garden.

Carmello Anthony jerseys are also going to be big sellers. For the record, he will be sporting number 7 for his new team.

Knicks looking for a center

Pro basketball is back in swing at Madison Square Garden; New York Knicks tickets are fast becoming a hot commodity with the addition of Carmello Anthony.

Meanwhile, with Timofey Mozgov packing his bags, the team appears to have its mind set on picking up a center. They are sorely lacking in the big man area. To that end, the Knicks have been talking with the Sacramento Kings about Samuel Daelmbert. Dalembert would provide a physical presence in the middle that NY is missing.

Anthony traded to Knicks [official]

The wait is over - the New York Knicks have acquired star forward Carmello Anthony to pair with Amar'e.

The New York Knicks will acquire: Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman.

The Denver Nuggets receive: Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, Wilson Chandler, New York's 2014 first-round draft pick, Golden State's 2012 second-round pick and 2013 second-round pick along with $3 million in cash.

Some reports have alleged that this is in fact a three team deal and that the Minnesota Timberwolves will receive Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry from the New York Knicks. What the T-Wolves would give (either to the Nuggets or NY) remains unclear.

Melo-Drama: Trade Deadline Approaches

As of Monday morning, the New York Knicks are continuing their bid to land star forward Carmello Anthony from the Denver Nuggets; the move could be the second building block in the construction of New York's own "big three", since the team added All-Star forward Amar'e Stoudemire in free agency last year.

Weeks ago, New Jersey Nets owner (and Russian playboy) Mikhail Prokhorov discontinued pursuit of Anthony (26) after frustrating negotiations. Now, the Nets may be back in business, as team officials met with Anthony before last weekend's All-Star Game. Additionally, the Nets offer remains the biggest on the table, featuring as many as 4 draft picks and a young potential star of their own.

However, the sticking point remains the contract extensions. Carmello apparently wants to return home to the Big Apple and play with the New York Knicks, and appears unlikely to sign with Jersey. Without such a guarantee, Denver may only have one trading partner.

Of course, that hasn't stopped the Denver Nuggets from remaining aggressive. The New York Knicks have reportedly offered: PG Raymond Felton, SF Danillo Gallinari and the contract of expiring F Wilson Chandler for Anthony, veteran PG Chauncey Billups and some complimentary players.

The rumors vary from time to time with both sides throwing more chips on to the table. Still, the Denver Nuggets have been increasing their asking price, hoping that New Jersey's involvement will convince the N.Y. to bite on a more demanding deal. Recent reports indicate that Denver would like N.Y. to add rookie C Timofey Mozgov, but that isn't likely to happen.

Meanwhile, accusations have been made that owner James Dolan and fan hated figure Isiah Thomas have stolen command in the pursuit of Anthony. New York ownership is officially denying reports that General Manager Donnie Walsh is uninvolved in the negotiations.

The trade deadline is Thursday, February 24th. Carmello is expected to be in a New York Knick uniform by that time, the major question remains: how much are his suitors willing to offer to make sure this gets done?

4ScoreNY will bring you full details of the trade if and when it occurs.
