Melo-Drama: Trade Deadline Approaches

As of Monday morning, the New York Knicks are continuing their bid to land star forward Carmello Anthony from the Denver Nuggets; the move could be the second building block in the construction of New York's own "big three", since the team added All-Star forward Amar'e Stoudemire in free agency last year.

Weeks ago, New Jersey Nets owner (and Russian playboy) Mikhail Prokhorov discontinued pursuit of Anthony (26) after frustrating negotiations. Now, the Nets may be back in business, as team officials met with Anthony before last weekend's All-Star Game. Additionally, the Nets offer remains the biggest on the table, featuring as many as 4 draft picks and a young potential star of their own.

However, the sticking point remains the contract extensions. Carmello apparently wants to return home to the Big Apple and play with the New York Knicks, and appears unlikely to sign with Jersey. Without such a guarantee, Denver may only have one trading partner.

Of course, that hasn't stopped the Denver Nuggets from remaining aggressive. The New York Knicks have reportedly offered: PG Raymond Felton, SF Danillo Gallinari and the contract of expiring F Wilson Chandler for Anthony, veteran PG Chauncey Billups and some complimentary players.

The rumors vary from time to time with both sides throwing more chips on to the table. Still, the Denver Nuggets have been increasing their asking price, hoping that New Jersey's involvement will convince the N.Y. to bite on a more demanding deal. Recent reports indicate that Denver would like N.Y. to add rookie C Timofey Mozgov, but that isn't likely to happen.

Meanwhile, accusations have been made that owner James Dolan and fan hated figure Isiah Thomas have stolen command in the pursuit of Anthony. New York ownership is officially denying reports that General Manager Donnie Walsh is uninvolved in the negotiations.

The trade deadline is Thursday, February 24th. Carmello is expected to be in a New York Knick uniform by that time, the major question remains: how much are his suitors willing to offer to make sure this gets done?

4ScoreNY will bring you full details of the trade if and when it occurs.
